It’s insane how many beginners try to “hot launch” with the kite deep in the power zone. If your kites are too big of conditions - don’t go out! When in doubt, always go with a smaller kite. Scan for any obstacles downwind (on the water or onshore), be cautious around obstacles, stay far upwind or go downwind of them. No one needs to jump and do tricks close to shore. Keep your hand on your safety while onshore/launching the kite. I don’t know about you guys, but it sounds like the OP is one of the guys that MIGHT be able to do it on his own. It’s all about how much responsibility you take for your OWN safety and always thinking ahead about what could go wrong. So as someone who's seen a LOT of #2, I generally ask if they've taken lessons and try to apply some encouragement for them to do so. 2) Newbies who think it'll be fine to pick something off of ebay/craiglist and go directly to the beach without lessons. 1) Riders who know what they're doing and prefer older kites for whatever reason. There are generally 2 types of riders who do that. So, this means that there are high odds that OP has picked up a used older kite somewhere. There are a couple of exceptions to this, but for the most part modern kites make it so it's harder to swap your inside and outside lines resulting in a death spiral. So you have monkey fists on the inside and loops on the outside lines. To clarify why I ask, nowadays most models come with "kook proof" connectors.
